Welcome to the month of February!

We blinked and it is already the second month of the new year, unbelievable! Right?

As we move forward in time, our enthusiasm and motivation for the so called “new year resolutions” tend to boil down, sometimes life happens, and our motivation becomes unpredictable or what I would call: erratic motivation.

Motivation, as general definition, refers to the willingness to do something, the force that makes us act, take action. So how do we keep it going, how do we renew it every day?

Motivation can have external or internal sources. Extrinsic motivation refers to rewards or praise from others, while intrinsic motivation refers to the feeling of accomplishment and/or being a valuable company resource.

What works for me? I focus on the feeling and sense of achievement that completing the task or goal will give me. As an example, I set the goal to complete ten thousand steps every day, because I want to stay active while I have a sedentary job. I did it the first day, it felt great! Did it the second day… awesome! Third day comes and it’s a busy day, it’s late, and I feel tired, perfect scenario to skip it…well, I remember how good it felt to break a sweat and look at the 10K steps completed….so I went for a walk around the neighborhood. Completing the 10K steps was not only satisfying but I felt that I defeated my self-doubt and overcame my excuses. The next day, it just happened, no excuses. It’s been happening for the last 5 months and I had a great side effect, I’ve lost some weight! Of course, I’ve had days off, where I did rest and jumped back on the train the next day.

¡Bienvenidos al mes de Febrero!

En apenas un parpadeo estamos empezando el segundo mes del nuevo ao, ¡increible!  cierto?

A medida que el tiempo pasa, nuestro entusiasmo y motivacion para seguir con las llamadas “resoluciones de año nuevo” tiende a disminuir, la vida se complica y nuestra motivacion se vuelve impredecible o como yo le llamo: motivacion erratica.

La motivación, como se la define generalmente, se refiere a la voluntad de hacer algo, la fuerza que nos hace actuar, tomar accion. Entonces, ¿cómo hacemos para mantenerla, cómo la renovamos todos los días?

La motivación puede nacer por estímulos internos y/o externos. La motivación extrínseca se basa en elogios de los demás o la posibilidad de obtener recompensas, mientras que la motivación intrínseca se refiere a la satisfacción que nos genera cumplir la meta o también al sentirnos un recurso valioso para la empresa o el entorno donde nos movemos.

¿Qué me ha funcionado a mí? Mi concentro en el sentimiento y la sensación de logro que me dará cumplir con mi meta u objetivo. Como ejemplo les cuento que me puse la meta de hacer diez mil pasos cada dia para mantenerme activa porque mi trabajo es muy sedentario. ¡Lo hice el primer dia y fue fantástico! ¡El segundo dia, genial! Y el tercer dia, ya se me hizo tarde, estaba cansada y era la situación perfecta para no hacerlo, pero recordé que bien me había sentido los dos días anteriores y salí a caminar por el área. Llegar a los diez mil pasos no solo fue un logro, sino que también me recordó que puedo superar mis dudas y las excusas que mi mente pueda encontrar. Y así fueron pasando los días y hace 5 meses que comencé y además una consecuencia de la constancia ha sido perder peso. Por supuesto que he tenido días libres, de descanso, pero al otro dia, vuelvo a mi rutina.
